I met Tom and Joan Kelley at a Congressional Medal of Honor Society dinner in New York a few years ago. They are the kind of people you like instantly, friendly, outgoing and easy to laugh: Tom, the celebrated recipient of that Congressional Medal, and Joan, his bright, engaging partner. Lord Salisbury briefly kept Joan confined in their home and tried to persuade her of the wrongness of her attitude, but it was no use. [5] In 1349, Pope Clement VI annulled Joan's marriage to the Earl and sent her back to Thomas Holland.

In battle, she wore men’s clothing and the armour of a knight when Joan of Arc was in battle. The reason for this was that she wanted to keep from being molested by male troops while camped in the field, thereby preserving her chastity.
